UK company formation, explained simply

A private limited company (Ltd) is a separate legal entity: it owns its assets, signs its own contracts, and its shareholders' liability is limited to what they have invested. To register one, you need a company name, at least one director aged 16 or over, at least one shareholder, a registered office address in the same UK nation as the company, a description of the business (SIC code), and articles of association.

You can apply to Companies House yourself. Using a formation agent like Form My Company means the name checks, identity verification (which we carry out ourselves as a Companies House ACSP), registered office, filings and documents are handled for you, and someone is on hand to answer questions before and after registration. The Companies House registration fee — currently £100 — and VAT are included in all of our package prices.

Common questions

How long does it take to register a company?

Once you have paid and completed the company details form, we normally submit the application the same working day. Companies House usually registers online applications within 24 hours, often within a few hours.

Can I form a UK company if I don't live in the UK?

Yes. Directors and shareholders can live anywhere. The company needs a registered office address in the UK, which we provide, and every director must verify their identity — we can do this for you remotely as a Companies House ACSP. See the Non-Resident Package.

Is the Companies House fee included?

Yes. Every formation package includes the £100 Companies House registration fee, and all our prices include VAT. There are no extra government charges to form the company.

What is identity verification and do I need it?

Since 18 November 2025, new directors and people with significant control (PSCs) must verify their identity with Companies House. As a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), we can complete the check for you remotely as part of your order and give you your personal code. You can still verify yourself through GOV.UK One Login if you prefer.

Do I need a business bank account?

It isn't a legal requirement, but keeping company money separate makes accounting and tax much simpler. We can introduce you to business banking options when your company is registered.

Can I use my home address?

You can, but your registered office and director service addresses are public on the Companies House register. Our Registered Office Address and Director Service Address keep your home address private.
